What Is a Head Spa — And Is It Actually Worth It?
By Tilly Rose · 22 May 2026
If you've been on social media recently, you've probably seen head spa videos — that incredibly satisfying combination of scalp massage, steam, and hair treatments that looks almost meditative to watch.
But beyond the aesthetics, people have a lot of genuine questions. What does a head spa actually do? Is it just a nice experience, or does it produce real results? And how is it different from just washing your hair?
I've been offering head spa treatments at Nuerra since we opened, and I want to give you an honest answer to all of those questions.
What a head spa actually involves
A professional head spa is a dedicated scalp treatment — not just a hair treatment. The focus is the scalp itself: its condition, its health, and what it needs.
At Nuerra, a head spa starts with a scalp analysis. I look at whether your scalp is dry, oily, congested, or showing signs of sensitivity — because the treatment products I use will depend on what I find. There's no one-size-fits-all approach.
From there, the treatment involves a thorough cleanse, application of targeted treatment products, and a scalp massage that's specifically designed to stimulate circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage. The Luxury Head Spa extends this significantly — it's a longer, deeper treatment that also incorporates neck and shoulder work and premium steam therapy.
What a head spa does for your scalp
The scalp is skin. It has pores, it produces oil, it can become congested with product buildup, and it responds to stress and hormonal changes just like the skin on your face does. Most people pay a lot of attention to their facial skin and almost none to their scalp.
Regular scalp treatments improve circulation, which creates a better environment for hair growth. They remove the kind of buildup that regular shampooing doesn't fully address. And the therapeutic massage element has a very real effect on tension — the scalp, neck and jaw hold a significant amount of stress-related tension, and releasing it has benefits that go well beyond just your hair.
Can a head spa help with hair thinning?
This is the question I get asked most often. The honest answer is: it depends on the cause of the thinning.
For stress-related hair thinning — which is more common than most people realise — scalp treatments that improve circulation and reduce cortisol-related tension can make a genuine difference over a course of sessions. Several of my clients have noticed improvement in hair density with regular head spa appointments.
For genetic hair loss (androgenic alopecia), a head spa isn't a medical treatment and I'll always be honest about that. It can support scalp health and create better conditions for growth, but it's not a cure.
How is the Luxury Head Spa different from the standard one?
The standard Head Spa is a thorough, focused scalp treatment — everything I've described above. The Luxury Head Spa is longer (up to two hours and fifteen minutes), uses a more extensive range of premium treatment products, and includes a significantly extended massage that covers the scalp, neck and shoulders in much more depth. It's the treatment people most often describe as unlike anything they've had before.
Both are available at Nuerra and both are genuinely worth it — the right choice depends on what you're looking for and how much time you have.
Who is it for?
Anyone with a scalp, honestly. I see clients who come primarily for the relaxation, clients dealing with scalp concerns like dryness or oiliness, clients who are concerned about hair thinning, and clients who simply want to do something genuinely restorative for themselves.
It's also one of the most popular gift choices at Nuerra — particularly the Luxury Head Spa. It's the kind of experience people rarely buy themselves but absolutely love receiving.
