How to Prepare Your Skin for Summer
By Tilly Rose · 10 June 2026
Summer is one of the best times of year for your skin in some ways such as warmth, natural colour, that genuine outdoor glow. But it's also the season that does the most long-term damage if you're not thinking about protection.
Here's what I recommend for every client heading into summer.
Start with SPF... seriously
I know everyone says this. I'm going to say it again because it's the single most impactful thing you can do for your skin, full stop.
UV damage is cumulative. The pigmentation, uneven tone and textural changes that show up in your 40s and 50s are largely the result of UV exposure from earlier decades. Daily SPF 50 on your face, neck and décolletage is the most effective anti-ageing investment you can make.
In summer particularly, reapplication matters. SPF doesn't last all day. If you're spending time outdoors, reapply every two hours.
This is a good time to address existing pigmentation
If you've been dealing with uneven skin tone, sun spots or post-acne marks, early summer before the heaviest UV exposure is a good time to treat them. Chemical peels and microneedling both accelerate the fading of pigmentation, but they also leave the skin temporarily more sensitive to UV.
I'd rather treat pigmentation concerns in June before the height of summer than in August when UV levels are at their peak. If this is on your radar, come in for a consultation soon.
Adjust your skincare routine for the heat
The richer, heavier moisturiser that worked well in winter often feels too much in summer. Warmer temperatures increase oil production for most skin types, and a product that felt comfortable in January can start to cause congestion by July.
Switching to a lighter hydrating formula in summer isn't about using less it's about using the right texture for the season.
Treatments to consider before summer really hits
Chemical peels produce some of the best results for skin texture and tone but do require you to avoid sun exposure afterwards and for a few weeks following treatment. June is ideal as you can have your peel, follow the aftercare properly, and be in your best skin by July.
LED light therapy has no such restriction and can be used year-round with no concerns about sun sensitivity. It's a good treatment to keep in the rotation throughout summer.
Microneedling is also fine in summer as long as you're diligent with SPF afterwards. The collagen-building response continues regardless of the season, summer shouldn't put you off booking if it's on your list.
What to avoid
Avoid direct sun exposure immediately following any professional skin treatment at minimum for 48 hours, longer after peels. This isn't just a precaution; UV exposure on freshly treated skin can cause pigmentation that's very difficult to resolve.
And if you're using retinoids as part of your home skincare routine, be aware that they increase photosensitivity. Either reduce frequency in summer or be very consistent about SPF, ideally both.
